Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced Wednesday (Feb. 11) a package of BRL 4.64 billion in investments for the expansion and modernization of 11 airports in four states.

The government estimates that, during the implementation of the project, financed by the country’s development bank BNDES, over 2 thousand direct and indirect jobs should be created.

In a statement, Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports said that the proposal is to increase airport operational capacity, particularly at São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport, which will increase from a capacity of 29 million to more than 40 million passengers per year.
“The investments also include terminals in the states of Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Pará, connecting productive areas in the interior to large centers,” the note adds.
